Australian Mathematics Competition

Thursday 30 July 2020

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually since 1978. Your child is invited to enter this internationally recognised competition.  One of the largest annual events on the Australian education calendar, the AMC was the first competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 30 countries participate each year.

The competition aims to be accessible to all students from Years 2 to 12, not just the mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student. The AMC consists of five separate papers, each with 30 questions in the Middle Primary (Years 3 and 4 – Apt Year 2 Students are welcome to enter), Upper Primary (Years 5 and 6), Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) and Senior (Years 11 and 12) divisions. Time allowed is 60 minutes for the primary papers and 75 minutes for the secondary papers.

You can access more information at https://www.amt.edu.au/australian-mathematics-competition

Over 1,000 students share the prizes and around 50% of participants qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Distinction or Credit. All other entrants in the competition receive a Certificate of Participation or a Proficiency Certificate. All students are also provided with a detailed report showing how they performed on each problem with wider statistical rankings.  Last year we had 9 students from Cooktown P-12 State School sit the competition, and our students were awarded 2 Distinction, 3 Credits and 3 Proficiencies!

The cost to enter the competition is $6.50 per student.  However Cooktown P-12 State School is generously subsidising this such that the cost per student is only $2.

We believe that your child will benefit significantly from this opportunity and the skills and attributes developed and enhanced will help them in good stead both in their normal classes, and in the future.  Two of our students have been ‘discovered’ by performing brilliantly in these competitions; invited to all-expenses paid STEM Camps at the Australian National University in Canberra, and the University of Queensland in Brisbane!  We commend the Australian Mathematics Competition to you as an opportunity to encourage your child in their love and study of mathematics. To give your child this valuable experience, please complete the consent form and hand into the school office with the $2 by 9:00am, Wednesday the 27th of May.  Forms can be collected from your child’s Deputy Principal.
